Aged Care Strategy – Accommodation Payment – Timing entry when couples enter care

This can benefit couples who :

  • enter aged care at the same time

Potential Benefits:

  • Where both members of a couple enter aged care on the same day, the capped value of the former home is generally included in both members of the couples means tested amount assessment at date of entry. This results in both members of the couple paying an accommodation payment
  • An alternative strategy is to stagger entry. In this case, the first member of the couple does not include the capped value of the former home at date of entry as a protected person resides in the home. This may result in qualifying as a low means resident15. The second member of the couple to enter aged care will include the capped value of the former home, resulting in an accommodation payment being payable
  • Staggering entry may result in the first member of the couple to enter aged care paying an accommodation contribution. This may be less than an accommodation payment

Things to be aware of:

  • It is important to check that the person is able to enter their aged care facility of choice before
  • Deciding whether a couple should enter on the same day or stagger entry.
  • Also check whether they are able to obtain the desired room in the aged care facility e.g. adjoining rooms
